Supreme Court Delivers Ruling in the Presidential Election Petition

KAMPALA: The Supreme Court of Uganda on Thursday March 31, 2016 delivered its ruling in the high-billed presidential election petition filed on March 1, 2016 by one of the former contestants, Mr. John Patrick Amama Mbabazi.

The nine Justices of the court, led by the Hon. Chief\r\nJustice, Hon. Justice Bart M. Katureebe unanimously agreed to dismiss the petition. The eight other justices on the petition were honorable\r\nJustices: Jotham Tumwesigye, Dr. Esther Kisaakye, Mary Stella Arach-Amoko,\r\nAugustine Nshimye, Eldad Mwangusya, Rubby Aweri-Opio, Faith Mwondha and Prof.\r\nLillian Tibatemwa Ekirikubinza.

\r\n\r\n

Mr Mbabazi, the former premier, who came third in the\r\npresidential race, behind Rtd. Col. Dr Kizza Besigye and President Yoweri\r\nMuseveni, petitioned the Supreme Court citing irregularities in the elections.

\r\n\r\n

He sued the poll winner, President Museveni jointly with\r\nthe Electoral Commission and the Attorney General seeking to nullify the\r\nFebruary 18, 2016 presidential poll results.

\r\n\r\n

The laws governing presidential poll petitions allow the\r\ncourt only 30 days to hear and determine a petition.

\r\n\r\n

President Museveni was on February 20, 2016 declared the\r\nwinner of the presidential race with 60.62% of the votes, followed by Dr.\r\nBesigye, (35.61%), while Amama polled 1.39% of the total votes cast.
